Renting a boat in Palma

Where to Rent a Boat in Palma

Two boats, two berths, both a few minutes from the cathedral. Here is which one suits the day you have in mind.

Palma's harbour runs in one long arc below the old town, and our two boats sit at either end of it: the RIB MistrESS at Club de Mar, the boat ESSOESS at Moll Vell, right under the cathedral. Both are a few minutes' walk from the centre, which is worth knowing — a boat you have to drive half an hour to reach has already eaten an hour of your day.

Which of the two you want matters rather more than where you collect it. So here they are side by side: what a day costs, how many of you can come, and whether anyone needs a licence.

Where the boats leave from

Two berths, about ten minutes apart on foot. Which one you head for depends on which boat you are after.

ESSOESS

The whole boat, crew included. Twelve of you for the day, eight staying the night, and nobody needs a licence — the crew do the driving and the cooking and the knowing-where-to-go.

The quick one. Twelve aboard, out of the harbour in minutes, and yours to drive if you hold a licence. If you would rather not, add a skipper and just enjoy the ride.

Which one do you want?

ESSOESS is a day laid on for you. The RIB is a boat you take and use. That difference shows up in the price more plainly than anywhere else, so start there and work backwards.

Do you need a licence?

For ESSOESS, never — she comes with her crew and that is not the sort of thing you can decline. For the RIB it depends entirely on whether you want to take the wheel yourself.

With ESSOESS

Always crewed, so nobody aboard needs a document of any kind. They know this coast: which cove has room on a Saturday, where the water is clearest that morning, which restaurant will still find you a table at three.

With the RIB, driving her yourself

Then there are rules, and they are not ours — they are what the Spanish authorities require for a boat this size. We check them at the pontoon before you leave.

  • To take the boat out without a skipper you need a valid licence, checked and approved before the rental begins.
  • Spanish licence: PER, patrón de yate or capitán de yate. Non-Spanish licence: any qualifying title for maritime navigation in this vessel in the Mediterranean.
  • The original licence is requested at check-in. Photos and copies are not valid.

Or skip the question entirely

Add a skipper and the licence stops mattering. Same boat, same day, someone else at the wheel who already knows where he is going.

Half a day covers the bays on either side of the city — a swim, lunch somewhere with a jetty, back before the afternoon breeze. A whole one gets you round to the quieter coast and home again without watching the clock.

Questions we get asked

Our two boats leave from opposite ends of Palma's harbour. The MistrESS RIB is at Club de Mar, Muelle Pelaires s/n, berth 1026. The boat ESSOESS is at berth 4 on Moll Vell, directly below the cathedral. Both are a few minutes on foot from the old town and about ten minutes from each other, so neither costs you any real part of the day to reach.

We have two, and they make for quite different days. ESSOESS is a 24-metre Alalunga 78 motor boat with a crew of four: twelve guests for a day out, eight sleeping aboard. MistrESS is a 9-metre Vanguard RIB for up to twelve, which you can drive yourself or take with a skipper. ESSOESS is a day laid on for you; the RIB is a boat you take and use.

Not for ESSOESS — she is always chartered with her crew, so nobody aboard needs anything at all. For the RIB you need one only if you intend to drive her yourself: a Spanish PER, patrón de yate or capitán de yate, or a licence from another country that qualifies you to navigate a vessel of this size in the Mediterranean. We ask for the original document at check-in, as photographs and copies are not accepted. Add a skipper and the question does not arise.

The RIB starts at 450 € for four hours and 640 € for eight. ESSOESS, with her crew and fuel included, starts at 2695 € for four hours and 3495 € for eight. Both figures are for the whole boat rather than per person, so twelve of you pay what two would.

The RIB, yes, provided you hold a valid licence. A deposit is taken at check-in and it is higher without a skipper than with one, since without one the boat is entirely in your hands. ESSOESS cannot be taken bareboat: she is chartered with her crew, always.

The captain has the final say on whether it is safe to leave the harbour, and that decision is never up for negotiation. If conditions stop you sailing we move you to another date when one is free, and refund you when it is not.
